Google Shutting Down a Version of Google+ After Bug Exposed Private Data

Google will be shutting down the consumer version of Google+ over the next 10 months after a bug exposed private data in as many as 500,000 accounts, completing the shut down by August 2019. Google said “Over the coming months, we will provide consumers with additional information, including ways they can download and migrate their data.”

In March, a security audit exposed a software bug that gave third-party apps access to users private Google+ profile data. The data accessed was limited and Google said messages and telephone numbers were not able to be accessed.

Google+ was launched in 2011, but never gained traction with users. Google said “The consumer version of Google+ currently has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds.”
